What is an Internal Medicine Physician?

An internal medicine physician is a personal physician who provides long-term, comprehensive care in the office and at the hospital, managing both common and complex illnesses in healthy adults as well as the elderly. Internists are trained in the diagnosis and treatment of cancer, infections, and diseases affecting the heart, blood, kidneys, joints and digestive, respiratory and vascular systems. They are also trained in the essentials of primary care internal medicine which incorporates an understanding of disease prevention, wellness, substance abuse, mental health, and effective treatment of common problems of the eyes, ears, skin, nervous system, and reproductive organs.

In today’s complex medical environment, as an Internal Medicine Physician, Dr. Khedia takes pride in caring for his patients for life — in the office, during hospitalization, and in the nursing home. When other medical specialists, such as surgeons or obstetricians, are involved, he coordinates his patient’s care and manages difficult medical problems associated with that care.

Here is a quote from a physician that Dr. Khedia concurs with: “My understanding of the relationship between a physician and patient is that we work together to accomplish a desired goal. My principle roll is to provide the patient with accurate information about their condition or diagnosis. That usually includes defining options of treatment that are available in managing a particular condition. Most of the time both the patient and I are happy at the end of the day but there are few if any guarantees in this business we call the practice of medicine.”
